This is what Kevin Eubanks, guitarist and band leader for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno said:
Freddie Hubbard once told me, 'If you have your own sound, you don't ever have to worry about getting shown up onstage or at a jam session, because you're not competing with anybody - people are coming to hear your sound'. ... the audience is not looking for hot licks, they're listening for a specific personality to be expressed. Everybody [has their own sound] from the day they are born. No one has your fingerprint and no one sounds like you. Most guitar players are always trying to become faster, slicker, this or that, but having your own sound is not about becoming, it's about just being - it's about being yourself in a world that's trying to make you like everybody else.
